You need to go into surgery soon and are you are wondering what is the cost of hospitalization in Singapore? Or you just want to compare the prices between the different hospitals in Singapore. To help you, we've summarized the prices of hospitalization according to certain types of surgeries in Singapore.

A) The differences between public and private hospitals

One of the main differences between privates and publics hospitals are the prices of the consultations, surgeries, and hospitalizations.

The cost of the same kind of treatment might indeed change dramatically, even for minor cases. This is because the average cost difference between Singapore's public and private hospitals is around 70%. In some cases, the bills could even be 10 times higher, which is the case for an appendix surgery, for example! To have a clear understanding of the gap in the prices between private and public hospitals:

Reason for the admission Hospital
(Private/Public)
Room type The average number of days in the hospital Middle prices in general * (SGD)
Appendix surgery
(without complications)
Mount Alvernia Hospital private 3,2 17,828
Changi General Hospital Ward B1 2,0 4,591
Back problems (without complications) Raffles Hospital private 2,0 5,243
Gleneagles Hospital private 3,4 6,333
Singapore General Hospital private
(ward A)
3,1 3,225
Pneumonia
(without serious complication)
Mount Elizabeth Hospital private 4,5 8,668
KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital private
(ward A)
2,9 2,673

"Middle prices in general" means that at least half of the admitted patients pay less than this amount for this pathology.

However, you must take into account that the gap within the hospitals themselves can be quite significant. Let's take the example of an admission at Singapore General Hospital, a public hospital, for fainting (syncope) and collapse (for causes such as hyper/ hypo-tension) with no serious complications. Even in the hospital, the prices can vary quite a lot. The prices can range from S$1,737 for an "inexpensive" bill to S$4,490 for an "expensive" one. This gap can also be seen with private hospitals. At Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, the difference for an admission for asthma without any serious complications ranges from S$4,298 to S$8,231.

Insurance companies are perfectly aware of this considerable price gap. In consequence, they are passed on the additional costs of the premiums. Most of the time, you can choose between two types of coverage. The first type includes hospitalisation in public hospitals, while the second is for private hospitals, which is considerably more expensive.

B) The Type of room Impacts the Price

Another consideration would have a direct impact on the cost of your health insurance - that is, the type of hospital room you choose. Whether private, semi-private, ward A, ward B1, and so on will impact prices. Would you prefer to be alone in your private hospital room? Or are you prepared to share a room with other patients? The type of room you are hospitalized indirectly impacts your hospitalization bill. Indeed, the price of surgeries is dependant on the type of room you are hospitalized in.

Be careful, some hospitals don't have all types of room. Therefore, make sure the room you're covered for is available in the hospital you are planning to stay. For example, the Mount Elizabeth Hospital at Novena offers only private rooms. For more information, read our advice before going to the hospital.

You could also ask yourself if the quality of healthcare between private and public hospitals varies considerably. Please note that in general, Singapore's public hospitals are better renowned than privates. For example, Singapore National University Hospital is ranked 299th worldwide.
