In Singapore, childbirth and maternity fees will be at your expense. As a matter of fact, the prices can dramatically increase in the event of complications during childbirth. To help you estimate the appropriate health insurance to cover your pregnancy, we have gathered the prices in different hospitals around Singapore. You will observe that certain factors can help you optimize your budget.

A) The prices of childbirth without complications


The price of a childbirth can vary considerably. As a matter of fact, several factors must be taken into account:

    • the hospital type (private or public)

    • the type of rooms (ward A or ward B, private or semi-private...)

    • the type of childbirth

Note that the prices indicated are related to the childbirth expenses and not to the consultations during the pregnancy.

However, you must take into account that the difference in pricing within the hospitals. Let's take the example of a "normal" childbirth at Singapore General Hospital. A "normal" childbirth is a childbirth without caesarean. At this hospital, the gap can be huge. It can vary from S$3,740 for a "low" bill to S$5,589 for a "high" bill with a Ward A room. This gap can also be seen within private hospitals. At Gleneagles Hospital, the prices for a "normal" childbirth vary from S$4,336 to S$5,731.

A mother stays in average 2 to 4 days after giving birth in Singapore. However, this depends on the hospital type (private or public) and the type of pregnancy. We strongly advise you to get advance confirmation that your gynecologist can operate in the hospital you want. Indeed, some gynecologist are associated with certain hospitals and will not proceed to your delivery elsewhere.

Cases like these happen frequently: where mothers-to-be would like to have their child delivered in a public hospital. However, they are required to give birth at the private hospital their chosen gynecologist is associated with.

B) The prices of childbirth with complications


Complications can occur during childbirth. In that case, the prices can increase drastically and even double in some extreme cases.

On average, a young mother would stay in hospital for at least 2-3 days.We strongly advise you to get advance confirmation that your gynecologist will be able to perform your delivery in the hospital of your choice. Cases like these happen frequently: where mothers-to-be would like to have their child delivered in a public hospital, but are instead required to give birth at the private hospital their chosen gynecologist is associated with.

C) The prices after childbirth


You must also take into that the your newborn may need to stay in observation. This can last a couple of days, perhaps even more in the event of some complications. This can make the bill increase considerably.
